How to Prepare for the Year Ahead in Childcare

At Cherubs Early Learning Centre

The start of a new year in childcare is an exciting milestone — for children, parents, and educators alike. Whether your child is returning to Cherubs or beginning their childcare journey for the very first time, a little preparation goes a long way in setting up a calm, confident, and positive year ahead.

With more than 20 years of experience in early childhood education, Cherubs Co-Owner and Director Lisa Peasley understands that smooth transitions aren’t about rushing — they’re about trust, connection, and feeling safe.

Set Up Strong Morning Routines

Children thrive on predictability. In the weeks leading into the new year, start establishing consistent wake-up times, breakfast routines, and calmer mornings. Simple steps — like practising getting dressed or putting shoes on — help children feel capable and confident as they head into their day.

Stay and Play: Taking the Time Your Child Needs

At Cherubs, we actively encourage parents to stay and play during the initial settling-in period. This gentle approach allows children to explore their environment with the reassurance of a familiar face nearby.

There’s no rush. Some children are ready to jump straight in, while others benefit from a slower transition. Staying to play helps children build trust with educators, feel secure in their surroundings, and form positive associations with childcare from day one. Our experienced team will guide you on when and how to gradually step back — always led by your child’s cues.

Pack Smart (and Know What We Provide)

We aim to make life easier for busy families. At Cherubs, we provide nappies and sun-safe hats, so those daily essentials are covered.

Families are asked to provide food, so packing healthy, familiar meals and snacks can support your child’s comfort and energy levels throughout the day. We recommend also packing:

  • A clearly labelled water bottle
  • A change of clothes (or two!)
  • A comfort item if needed, particularly for younger children

Understanding Your Child Care Subsidy

If something about your Child Care Subsidy doesn’t make sense — please ask. It’s far better to clarify things early than to feel unsure or miss out.

Lisa has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to making sense of childcare subsidies and how small changes can sometimes make a big difference. Asking nice and early gives you the best chance of getting the most out of your subsidy, and we’re always happy to help point you in the right direction.

Need an Extra Day?

We understand that family schedules can change. Cherubs offers additional or casual days on a first-in, first-served basis. If you feel you may need an extra day — even occasionally — please let us know as early as possible, as availability can fill quickly.

Early communication gives us the best chance to support your family’s needs while maintaining consistency for the children in our care.

Experience You Can Trust

One of Cherubs’ greatest strengths is our exceptional team of educators, guided by Lisa’s extensive experience in early childhood education. Every child is different, and our approach is flexible, nurturing, and relationship-based.

Trust the Process

Settling into childcare is a journey, not a race. At Cherubs, we prioritise emotional wellbeing, strong relationships, and open communication with families. When parents and educators work together, children flourish.

If you have questions — about settling in, subsidies, or additional days — our door is always open. We’re proud to partner with families and look forward to another wonderful year of learning, growth, and connection at Cherubs Early Learning Centre.
